In our experience, most electrical issues comes from loose connections. For example, a light fixture that draws less than 0.25 amps, even if the joints aren’t perfect & tight, it won’t cause any problems. On the other hand, if you connect a thermostat that manages more than 10 amps… the joints need to be made by a professional to prevent them from melting.
Another major cause of electrical problems is corrosion. Even inside a home, moisture can seep into electrical boxes. For instance, we once encountered a junction box in the ceiling of a poorly ventilated kitchen where the connections were so badly affected that the voltage on the downstream circuits dropped from 120V to 40V.
