In the rural region of the Laurentides, trees are the primary cause of damage to aerial electrical services. However, one potentially surprising cause is snow and ice sliding off the roof.

In winter, snow can accumulate on the roof. Over time, it compacts, becomes very heavy, and can turn into a block of ice.

During a thaw or in the sun, it suddenly slides.

When this mass falls onto the power line, it can tear off the PVC electrical pole screwed to the exterior siding and/or weaken the connections. Or, if it slides against the metal mast that passes through the roof, the pole can bend.

Solutions? There are four!

1. Roof snow removal.
2. Installation of snow guard (ice guards) above the electric mast.
3. Installation of a cable Electric heater above the electric mast.
4. A mast protector.
