• An EV charger consume lots of energy. It alone can consume up to almost half the electrical capacity of your panel, if the latter is 100A. It is crucial to have this capacity assessed, as well as making solid connections and using resistant, durable materials during installation.
  • Even an electrical panel with a capacity of 200A sometimes needs to use an automatic charge controller. This is often necessary to avoid overloading the main circuit breaker, especially in the presence of large existing loads such as an electric furnace. Especially during the cold winter months when we have a high demand for electricity, this is when a charge controller becomes extremely important. On the other hand, if you have a gas/propane source that reduces your electrical consumption… a charge controller may not be necessary.
